There is a time and place for a modern wristwatch — in the field.
If you're out digging up unicorn bones in the Scottish highlands, battling space aliens with adaptive camouflage in some equatorial rainforest, defending your urban keep against a raging zombie horde — whatever — chances are a modern timepiece would be a better tool for the job. It has something to do with their inherently superior water resistance, durability, accuracy, as well as their ease of replacement and all that. We won't bore you with the practicality of it all.
Unimatic has been a favorite modern brand of ours since they launched in 2015. Based in Milan, Italy, they are the brainchild of two young Italian gentlemen who had a desire to construct minimalistic tool watches built to exacting standards with classic, industrial designs that are heavy, tough, and beautiful.
The particular Unimatic we have here is an example of the brand’s excellent field watch, the U2. Dubbed the U2-F, it features a perfectly sized, chunky 38.5mm stainless steel case with a sapphire crystal, a polished bezel, an unsigned crown, and a screw-down case back. Its dial is a highly compelling example of great industrial design — executed in RAF grey, it features large dot, dash and triangle indices coated liberally in Super-LumiNova, plus a matching bifurcated sword handset with grey edging. Powered by the workhorse Seiko NH35 automatic movement, it comes paired to a grey Cordura strap with a signed steel pin buckle.
Though our bread and butter may be vintage watches, how can we object to such a well designed field watch in excellent condition that comes with its factory goodies?
In short, we can’t — and neither should you!
